Most smokers are unable to think beyond their own cravings. They get angry when anyone suggests that they ought to quit, because in their own minds, what business it of anyone else's if they want to harm themselves? Except when you smoke, it's not just yourself you're harming. If there's someone nearby, you harm them too. Even if you smoke all alone in your own Markham real estate, you're harming your home. Keep reading to find out what smoking inside will do to your property.
When you smoke, although some of the chemicals and pollutants you inhale remain in your lungs, the majority of it is expelled in the form of smoke. If you smoke outside, it will dissipate into the atmosphere, but if you smoke in your Toronto waterfront condo, the smoke has no escape, so it sinks into whatever it can find. Over time, the chemicals from your cigarette smoke can impregnate your whole house and leak out again, creating a chemical atmosphere even when you are not actually smoking.
Cigarette smoke has the biggest effect on soft surfaces like fabrics and furniture. When you smoke, your sofa, your bed, your pillows, your carpeting, your curtains, and any stuffed toys you have absorb the smoke. Because the chemicals the smoke contains are so resilient, even washing these items in the washing machine before you put your home on the Toronto MLS will not rid them of the smoky smell. They must be specially cleaned, and even then there's no guarantee they will recover fully.
Even the hard surfaces in your home are affected. Cigarette smoke cannot penetrate the walls of your home if they are sealed by paint, but the chemicals and pigments in the smoke can condense on top of the paint, creating a stinky yellow film that immediately marks your homes for sale on PEI as a smoking property. Washing the walls will not remove it. The only way to fight this buildup is to paint over it, and even then the damage has been done because it's still there underneath, or you can painstakingly scrape off every flake of the old paint.
Not only do smokers' homes stink, but they also re-radiate these chemicals onto unsuspecting visitors, affecting their health, so there is no chance a non smoker would ever be interested in buying your home. Even if you're used to the smell, they will not be. If you decide to sell, you will be limiting your buyer pool to other smokers, the percentage of which in the population dwindles yearly. Therefore if you want to compete against other homes for sale in Vaughan and get a market competitive price, you need to smoke outside or quit. There are no other options.
