It has been a few decades now since it was discovered that secondhand smoke can be as dangerous to your health than actually being the one with the cigarette. Thanks to that research, now it seems that there are more and more countries that are jumping on the anti-smoke bandwagon and making it illegal to smoke inside all kinds of public spaces. Even those who have not yet kicked the habit are deciding to take their smoking outside instead of affecting others in their London Ontario homes or condo in Vancouver. If you're looking for some motivation to quit smoking the need to go outside even in the roughest weather might be the perfect tool to help you.

Prince Edward Island was actually the first of the provinces in Canada to ban smoking in workplaces and public areas. They did this in 2004 and were followed in May of 2004 by the Northwest Territories and Nunavut. Within the next few years the rest of the provinces and territories followed suit with bylaws that banned smoking in everything from bars in Toronto lofts to government buildings in Halifax. The last section of Canada to add this legislation was the Yukon in 2008.

Since then, many provinces have beefed up their laws against smoking to include things like the ability for business to promote tobacco products through on site displays and smoking in vehicles. For example, since January of 2009, it has been illegal to smoke in a personal car or airport taxi Toronto based if there is a person under the age of sixteen present in the vehicle.

Many people who smoke find that they are helped by these bylaws when it comes to quitting the habit. It is not very desirable to think about going outside for a smoke break between Revit tutorials at work or at home if it's raining or in the middle of a Canadian winter. Some businesses even have rules in place where you need to be a certain number of feet away from the building before you are allowed to light up. This is certainly true of government-owned facilities like schools and hospitals. So, you might even have more motivation if you're working for Stouffville eye doctors or as a schoolteacher and don't even have the protection of the building when you're outside smoking.

When watching shows and movies that are set in past generations, like the show Mad Men, it can be a little surprising to see how acceptable it was for a secretary to be smoking at her desk or people to light up in front of their small children in a restaurant. But the truth is that we have learned a lot about cigarettes over the years and it seems that the reasons to quit is just getting longer with each new set of research.
